Wonderous Willie
Wonderous Willie
By Thomas Piekarski
This plainspoken Alabaman absolutely
Exploded on New York. Manhattan
Went wild as the Giants roared from
Ten games back to take the pennant.
Everyone awed watching Mays
Run down balls in the gaps.
And the swiftness of his wrists
As he knocked out hit after hit
Was something magical to behold.
Later on he defied San Francisco winds,
Tamed them with his dashing speed.
And his powerful stroke sent many homers
Bouncing far up in the stands. Some
Sailed so far you thought they’d never land.
