Baseball is Punk
Baseball is Punk
Hunter Spurlock

“Baseball is punk” on a hat worn backwards
downtown bound to participate in the great
Americana experiment. Wrigley a few stops away
a reminder board, a shirt, “Don’t forget to play.”
They say the pastime’s beginning to fall
behind the other three letter leagues in
viewership and media conglomerate flowcharts.
Maybe so but certainly not in heart.
Together, we gather in the outfield
bleachers made famous by their ivy
and do the most radical things we can
think in today’s society: stand arm
in arm with strangers and neighbors,
all of us transformed into shirtless bums
united under the same blistering sun.
A homerun ball hit by the wrong colors
goes back – rejected by we the people
like a bad organ donation. Together
we’ve created somewhere everyone cares, and
it’s cool to say “hell yeah” about flyovers
and high-five over shared loyalty to the name
on the front. To sing like Harry and root root
root for the comeback, no matter the odds.
Hey, Chicago, what do you say?
“Baseball is punk” and “Don’t forget to play.”
