Swing Like Strawberry
Swing Like Strawberry
By Robert Fillman
His swing was as sweet as his name,
a geometric miracle,
that high leg kick a call to arms,
a challenge to every pitcher:
if an out is what you want, then
your path must go through me. Small kids
mimicked that low upward glide, swung
their barrels with a flare, hoping
to connect just once like he did,
send one soaring into the sky,
trigger an explosion of joy,
trot around the bases in style.
A lifelong New York Mets fan, Robert Fillman is the author of House Bird (Terrapin, 2022). His poems have appeared in Poetry East, Salamander, Tar River Poetry, Valparaiso Poetry Review, and elsewhere. His chapbook, November Weather Spell, was published by Main Street Rag Publishing in 2019.
