School Day World Series Game, 1962
School Day World Series Game, 1962
Edwin Romond
Harold would hide his radio
inside his Catholic school blazer
then ask Sister Ambrose if he
could go to the boys’ room
and upon return would silently
mouth the World Series score
to the boys’ side of the room
before sneaking me the radio inside
his spongy paperback catechism.
I’d wait ten minutes, raise my hand
and ask if I could go to the boys’ room
where I’d click on the game and listen
for Vin Scully to give the score.
Then I’d come back to class,
slip the radio to Tony who’d
wait a while then raise his hand
to ask if he could go to the lav.
And this went on all afternoon
boy after boy seeking sanctuary
among toilets and urinals for news
of Mantle and Maris and McCovey
and Mays in Candlestick Park playing
the most beautiful game in the world.
Edwin Romond’s latest book of poetry is Man at the Railing (NYQ Books). A lifelong Yankee fan, he lives in Wind Gap, PA with his wife, Mary.
